Quiet Play

Picture books, bead-stringing, pegboards, puzzles, doll play, coloring with crayons
What children get out of it: Quiet play allows children to socialise, build friendships, relax, read, or simply think.

Creative Play

Painting, drawing, problem solving, music, dancing, getting along with others, play dough, sand, collage, the use of imagination
What children get out of it: Creative play makes children better problem solvers and allows them to express themselves, gives children the freedom to explore and develop their senses. 

Active Play

Use of balls, slides, swings, push-pull toys, sand and water play, games, crates and blocks, riding tikes and bikes, running around, climbing trees, and the use of indoor materials like rhythm band, bean bag toss, "dress-up" clothes, cars and trucks
What children get out of it: Active play plays an important part in the health of children and makes a significant contribution to their physical activity. Active play helps children grown and learn.

Cooperative Play

Play that requires more than one person, such as ball games, tag, see-saws, playing dolls or house, block building, some swings, hide and seek
What children get out of it: Cooperative play allows and teaches children to work together as teammates and assist one another in many ways.  

Dramatic Play 

Children try out different kinds of life roles, occupations, and activities, such as firefighter, actor, actress, mother, dad, astronaut, dancer, singer, farmer, doctor, nurse, soldier
What children get out of it: Dramatic plays allows children to express themselves and permits them to fit the reality of the world into their own interests and knowledge. Dramatic play contributes strongly to the intellectual development of children.

Manipulative Play

Involves the use of hands, muscles, and eyes. Playing with puzzles, crayons, painting, cutting with scissors, stringing beads, the use of tools, block building, dolls, and trucks
What children get out of it: During manipulative play the hands, eyes and brain are trained to work smoothly together.  It helps to develop coordination and a wide variety of skills.
